heritageA permanent exhibition of Westray's history, flora and fauna can be seen here next to the Pierowall Hotel. In addition to the permanent exhibition, each year sees a new exhibition on a specific local topic. Local crafts can be purchased; coffee, limited opening hours. Now has an extensive database of churchyards and houses and a growing genealogy section.

See also the Westray Stone, brought back to its home island from the Orkney Museum.

There is also the re-assembled skeleton of a Sperm whale in the garden. This whale was washed up on the beach at Tuquoy.

The Heritage is commended by the Laura Grimond Award.

raymond_leslieA Westray man, Raymond is well know for his joinery skills in many local houses.

He took up wood turning a few years ago and now works hard to keep up with the demand for his fine craftwork, especially at Christmas, so please place your orders early.

Raymond is keen to find unusual timbers to turn and is looking out for particularly fine markings on the timber to use for gallery pieces. Orkney is not known for its forests, but the occasional driftwood can find itself changed into a thing of beauty after it has been carefully and lovingly dried out, turned and waxed.

Experience the uniqueness of the Island's past and present in this beautiful gallery and traditional tearoom. It is located in one of  Westray's most picturesque spots and is run by a local family.

Edwin Rendall and his daughter Rosemary produce a wide range of quality work for the gallery. Feel free to look around then relax with freshly brewed tea or coffee and sample his wife Elaine's mouth-watering homebakes.

An original deck cabin from a 19th century sailing ship provides a unique feature in the gallery. When the interior is finished it will offer a true step back in time for visitiors.

“A trip to Westray would not be complete without a visit to the Wheeling Steen Gallery”.

Westray Studios is an online gallery operated from premises two miles out of the village, overlooking the loch of Burness. This is a working studio so it is not open to the general public without a prior appointment. An email or telephone call will usually do it.

There are very few paintings on display as the majority can be seen at the Lynnfield Hotel in Kirkwall. An exhibition is being planned for a gallery in the Forres/Elgin area some time in 2012, but commissions can be undertaken for delivery after that date.
